Paynes Prairie: Surrounded by Wildlife

With the beautiful weather we’ve been having in North Central Florida, yesterday was the perfect day to visit the prairie. The many thousands of migratory Sandhill Cranes were a feast for the eyes, and their happy-sounding squawks could be heard all the way from the LaChua Trail parking lot. The walk down to the viewing platform, surrounded on all sides by flocks of cranes, was well worth the trek. Many other types of birds, as well as wild horses and buffalo, were within sight; and I completely lost count of the hundred or so alligators sunning themselves along the edge of the canal. An excellent day!
